2008 Fellowships and Scholarships

1. California Bar Foundation Diversity Scholarship.  California Bar Foundation is offering up to $7500 in scholarships to new law students.  Deadline is June 18, 2008.  Click here for more info.

2. PG&E.  PG&E is offering a $6,000/month fellowship for law students who finished their first year.  This fellowship, based in San Francisco, is part of PG&E's Diversity Pipeline Summer Program to learn about the company's multi-facted energy practice.  Applications are due on February 22, 2008. Click here for more information.

3. BASF.  Are you aware of a minority law student who has been accepted into an ABA Accredited Law School in the Bay Area?  Would they like to apply for a scholarship through The Bar Association of San Francisco?  Although we do not know the amount of the 2008 scholarship awards, in the past, these scholarships have been as much as $10,000 for 3 years, for a total of $30,000. For the scholarship application, please go to www.sfbar.org/scholarships.

4. Summer Boot Camp 2008 for students of color entering law school.  The Boot Camp teaches students to study effectively for law school, introduces students to the writing, thinking and test-taking skills needed to excel on law school exams, and builds a network of academic support that crosses school boundaries.  Click here for more information.

2007 Fellowships Scholarships

1. Asian Pacific Bar Association Silicon Valley Achievement Scholarship.  The APBASV Achievement Scholarship is a $3,000 scholarship awarded to a law student selected by the APBASV who has overcome personal hardships or challenges, and has demonstrated leadership in or service to the Asian Pacific Islander community in the United States.  The process includes submitting a resume and essay, and interviewing.  Click here for more information.  The application deadline is September 7, 2007 at 5 pm.   Please contact Daisy J. 2. ALA Summer Intern Fellowships. The Asian Law Alliance (the “ALA”) Summer Intern Fellowship is a $4,000 scholarship awarded to a law student who has been selected by Asian Law Alliance, and the Scholarship Committee, to complete a 10-week full-time (40 hours per week) summer internship at Asian Law Alliance. The summer interns are generally selected through the Public Interest/Public Sector Day organized by Public Interest Clearinghouse. Summer interns are chosen on the basis of their commitment and experience in community service. Two ALA Summer Intern Fellowships may be awarded annually. Click here for ALA's feedback!

3. APALI Leadership Scholarship. The APALI Leadership Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship awarded on the basis of the selected student’s academic leadership skills and achievements, among other factors. The selected student must have completed the Summer Leadership Academy and Leadership Training Internship offered at Foothill De Anza College, and must commit to volunteering and assisting at one APBA event within one year of receiving the scholarship award. One APBA Achievement Scholarship may be awarded annually. All scholarship recipients must attend the APBA Fall Scholarship Reception to be recognized for their achievements and their respective award. This requirement may be subject to limited exceptions, upon timely notification to the Scholarship Committee.  For more information, please read the Scholarship Guidelines.

4. Asian Law Caucus Fellowship Sponsorship. The Asian Law Caucus (ALC) is now accepting applications from graduating law students and new attorneys interested in applying for an Equal Justice Works, Skadden, Soros Justice and/or other fellowship opportunities.  The applications will be submitted with the relevant fellowship foundation(s) in Fall 2007 for a fellowship at ALC to commence in Fall 2008.   This position is open until filled.   We will start conducting interviews on June 25, 2007.   Please click here for more information. Fellowship projects being considered by ALC include juvenile justice, employment rights, and immigration rights. 

5. Equal Justice Society - Interns and Law Clerks.   Equal Justice Society is looking for public policy interns, law clerks, and research interns for fall, winter, spring and summer 2007-2008.  Click here for more info.

6. Latham & Watkins Diversity Scholars Program.  Latham & Watkins is once again pleased to announce the acceptance of applications for the firm's annual Latham & Watkins Diversity Scholars Program, which awards four second-year law students a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship each for use during their third year of law school. Scholar candidates are asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and official or unofficial law school transcript by September 15, 2007. Recipients will be announced in the early spring of 2008. The process is open to all second-year law students, and the scholarships are not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of employment at Latham. 7. VABANC (the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Northern California) will award three scholarships to law students who have shown a demonstrated interest to serving the Vietnamese American community.  Recipients will be honored at VABANC's Annual Scholarship Dinner to be held on October 12, 2007 in San Jose, CA at Dynasty Seafood Restaurant.  See application. 8. ACLU Fellowship: Drug Law Reform (Santa Cruz).

9. Supreme Court Fellows. Founded by Chief Justice Warren Burger in 1973, the Supreme Court Fellows Program is designed to provide mid-career professionals with the opportunity to enrich their careers by spending one year contributing to and observing the operation of the federal judiciary. 10. ABA Judicial Intern Summer 2008.  The Summer 2008 Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is a full-time, six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year minority and/or financially disadvantaged law students who want to do legal research and writing for state or federal judges in participating cities. Participating judges are from Illinois; Texas; Miami, FL; Phoenix, AZ; Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA; and Washington DC.
